Capcom discusses the chances of Rival Schools re-release  | read this item

Capcom’s success with their Super Street Fighter II HD Remix re-release, as well as Marvel vs. Capcom 2 earlier this year, has prompted the publisher to look at other franchises worth bringing back.

With floods of support for Darkstalkers, some have wondered about Capcom’s sleeper hit from the PlayStation era: Rival Schools United by Fate. Christian Svensson, vice president of strategic planning and business development for Capcom, has chimed in on the matter over at Capcom’s Unity message boards, an area he frequents often.

Unfortunately, the news isn’t good.

In his own words, “there are IP clearances and rights we no longer have (particularly pertaining to voicework/soundtrack I believe) so our IP management group has told us it can’t be re-released. I’m sorry as it’s one of the ones I really wanted to see be put back up. So if you still have that PS1 Rival Schools disc in your collection, it’s unfortunately going to be the only way that gets played for the foreseeable future.”

No mention is made of the Dreamcast sequel, Project Justice, but it is safe to assume the same issues apply.
